Again with the pink foam but also using some old-fashioned techniques.

Installing a bridge and some portals

Still roughing in the land forms but some good progress made with the addition of the major bridge feature and some portals.

At this point, working on this a bit each weekend and slowly making progress.

Using a backdrop to separate the sides of the layout

Bradley Saunders
February 21, 2021

Going back to the original design, the layout has two distinct sides and to enable each to appear independent of the other, a backdrop is used.

Adding some rock forms

Reusing one of my rubber rock face molds, this time with plaster instead of a multipart resin.

Stuff like this happens when designing on the fly

Bradley Saunders
January 30, 2021

It didn’t take long for me to make more design adjustment when I was faced with some difficult landscaping issues.

Refining the track for smoother and quieter operation

The next step involves laying down a rubber foam track roadbed and a bit of smoothing of some curves.

Completing the new track plan

After acquiring more track of various radii, I was now able to complete the track redesign.

Re-Imagining the P&W Railroad

Bradley Saunders
January 3, 2021

After many years of no attention, the P&W Railroad has finally sprung back to life but with only after deciding to revise the general approach to its construction and simplifying the track design as well.

Completing most of the foam grades

Bradley Saunders
August 5, 2006

A long break in the action on the P&W-RR as the Canyon Module grabbed all of my attention. Anyway, I did finally get back to complete most of the foam installation with all of the major grades completed.

Continuing up the grade

Bradley Saunders
May 24, 2005

As work continues you can see the north side grade building up.  As I did this section I discovered that creating a graceful route was easier to accomplish by using the foam riser's natural tendency to average out bends.

Illustrating the north side grade

Bradley Saunders
May 22, 2005

Just to give you some idea of how the north side grade will work, here is an illustration of that grade shown with the various foam build-ups that will be needed to make it work.

Beginning of an incline

May 21, 2005

In this photo you can see that I've extended the 1/2" sheet foam for the initial portion of the main part of the layout where the track remains level.

Building on a foam base

Bradley Saunders
May 21, 2005

Much of the P&W-RR structure is being built on a foam base and with foam incline grades.  All of the products use in this particular layout come from Woodland Scenics which are readily available at local hobby supply stores.  During the course of building up the layout, I'll share my experience with the use of foam and hopefully some interesting tips and techniques.

Using a bit of imagination

Bradley Saunders
May 17, 2005

And now with a little imagination, one might be able to visualize the layout on this very table!

Building a folding foundation

Bradley Saunders
May 14, 2005

The P&W-RR is designed as a fold-up layout.  This provides a space-saving benefit by allowing you to store the layout in a minimum of space when its not in use.

Electrical design plan

Bradley Saunders
May 9, 2005

The P&W-RR will be using traditional block control as I haven't got the DCC bug as of yet (and using DCC would probably represent a significant challenge for Z-scale even if I did!:o)  Anyway, most block designs can be converted into DCC without much effort if I ever do choose to take on the challenge.

Regarding grades on the P&W Railroad

Bradley Saunders
May 7, 2005

John Armstrong's original design assumes two basic grades : 3.6% on the steep side (shown above the middle scenery backdrop in my layout design) and 2.1% on the lower side.  Since I planned to use Woodland Scenics foam grades, I had to rework the grades ...
