After deciding to make the tunnel location change, I continued around the mainline from the portal and considered how to deal with the cliff face between the upper and lower sections. This is where I pulled out some existing rock molds and poured some plaster.
Unfortunately, by using plaster instead of the resins I’ve used with this rubber mold in the past, I wasn’t able to form it in a way to follow the curve - with the resin approach, I would have had time to reshape the rock form. As can be seen, the larger plaster ended up breaking into smaller pieces.
In the following image, I took the broken pieces and glued them back together as I added it to the layout - I’ll use other scenic materials to deal with the gaps and cracks once I get to the detailing stage.
And after a bit more work, the following shows the rocks being worked and you might notice that some of pieces that I had to break off to get these in place ended up being added to a portion of the resulting gully (gulch?).
