With the modules all temporarily mounted together, I'm now focusing on adding the foundations for the tracks runs. This is where it gets interesting as I can play around a bit with the layout design before finalizing the routes by glueing down the foam bases.
Since this module will have grades in both the mainline and the lumber routes, I'm using the Woodland Scenics foam materials to establish the grades using a mix of 2% and 3% ramps. The exposed mainline route has a 1% grade made by installing 3% ramps below 2% opposing ramps. The portion of the mainline that will be within the tunnel on the other side will be mostly a 2% grade with the upper fourth of the climb lowered down to 1%. The lumber industry route will be a mix of 2% and 3% in order to build up some significant height leading to a dramatic scene where this route will span over the mainline via a wooden trestle.
Here is a view further along the exposed mainline slowly dropping down with the lumber route making its way up a steep grade. You can see that I've already added the luan ply surfaces between the modules on this side of the layout, cut to match where the landscape surfaces are planned to go.
Another view, this time moving around the bend following the lumber route.
The highest portion of the lumber route at this point is roughly 70 feet above the level of the mainline that will be eventually running along the foreground of this scene. That will be the separate as well when the mainline runs below the diverging route.
To help visualize the separation, this view below includes a piece of section track sitting precariously across pieces of foam to represent its position once a trestle bridge is in place. Also seen in view are some track representing the mainlines that will be in a tunnel at that point on its 2% rise back up to the rest of the layout.
